Step 2

IV sedation — what to expect

IV sedation takes the fear and stress out of a surgical visit. Small doses of medication produce deep relaxation, reduced awareness of pain, and drowsiness, while local anesthetic keeps the treated areas fully numb. Most patients remember little of the procedure.

How to prepare

  • No food or drink for at least eight (8) hours before your appointment.
  • Skip necklaces, earrings, nail polish, perfume, cologne, and aftershave.
  • Wear warm, comfortable clothing with a short-sleeved shirt.
  • A responsible adult drives you home and stays with you until the effects fully wear off.
  • No driving or operating machinery for the rest of the day.
  • No alcohol for 24 hours after sedation.

Possible side effects include temporary nausea, bruising at the IV site, or drowsiness. Tell our team about any change in your health, every medication you take, and any past reaction to sedation or anesthesia.

Please note: routine dental implants are not a Medicaid or Medicare benefit and are primarily paid out-of-pocket or through third-party financing. If you have a credit score below 650, no co-signer, and require financing, we likely cannot help. Tooth loss with a medical cause may be different — see our medical insurance page.
