Same-Day Dental Implants: Are They Right for You?

Implant technique has moved a long way, and one of the biggest changes is the ability to place an implant and fit teeth to it in the same visit. It is variously called same-day implants, immediate-load implants, or “teeth in a day.” Here is what it actually means and who it suits.

What are same-day dental implants?

Same-day treatment means you receive both the implant fixture — the titanium post that replaces the tooth root — and a fixed restoration during the same appointment. Conventional protocol places the implant, waits three to six months for healing, and only then attaches teeth.

What you leave with is a fixed provisional, not the final restoration. It is screwed in place rather than removable, and it looks and functions like teeth. But osseointegration — the biological process where the implant fuses with your jawbone — still takes months. Once that is complete, the provisional is replaced with your definitive restoration. Any practice that describes the same-day teeth as permanent is overstating it.

How it works

Same-day loading depends on achieving primary stability: enough mechanical stability at the moment of placement to carry a restoration immediately. That is achieved through a combination of:

Strategic placement. The implants are positioned to maximize contact with the bone you have, often using areas of denser bone and angling implants to reach it.

Implant design. Fixtures used for immediate loading typically have thread patterns and surface treatments intended to improve initial stability.

Prosthetic planning. The provisional is designed to spread bite forces across the whole arch rather than concentrating them on individual implants.

The benefits

  • You do not spend months without teeth, and you do not wear a removable temporary while you heal.
  • One surgical appointment in most cases, which means one recovery rather than several.
  • Guided tissue healing. The provisional helps shape the gum tissue around the implants while integration happens.
  • It is easier to live through. Not having to hide your mouth for a season is a real benefit, not a cosmetic one.

Who qualifies

Same-day treatment is not right for everyone. Candidates typically have:

  • good general and oral health
  • sufficient bone density and volume
  • no uncontrolled periodontal disease
  • either non-smoking status or a genuine commitment to stopping
  • no significant untreated grinding or clenching habit
  • the willingness to maintain excellent oral hygiene

Patients with uncontrolled diabetes or immune conditions, those taking certain medications such as bisphosphonates, heavy smokers, and patients with insufficient bone may not be suitable for immediate loading. That does not mean implants are off the table — it means the conventional staged protocol, possibly with grafting first, is the safer route. We offer both.

Finding out

The only way to know whether you qualify is an examination and a 3D scan. If you do, same-day treatment is our cornerstone approach and it is right for all but rare cases. If you do not, we will tell you why and what the alternative looks like.

Please note: routine dental implants are not a Medicaid or Medicare benefit and are primarily paid out-of-pocket or through third-party financing. If you have a credit score below 650, no co-signer, and require financing, we likely cannot help. Tooth loss with a medical cause may be different — see our medical insurance page.
